A Basket Full of Color

I had been trying to figure out a project that would both be a good stash-buster and be a great carry along project. As I searched around for inspiration, I found this and this (and lots of others over there at Flickr).

I went to my stash, wanting to use up all of the bits left over from Joshua's Rainbow, and the giant granny squares I made for the craft fair last fall.

And this is what I ended up with...

With a little help from my color consultant (he pulls out a new color and says, "This one!") I started one circle at a time...

And when I get 7 together that I like (and that Noah approves), I make a row. I've been using the lovely, inspiring Lucy's awesome joining squares as you go method and I love it.

I'm planning to make 10 rows of 7 each to make a good sized throw for the rocker in our family room. With 5 of us and these New England mornings and evenings getting chillier, we can't seem to get enough cozy blankets in that room.

If you asked me 10 years ago if I thought that entering a room, and seeing all of my loves cuddled up in blankets that I made for them with my hands, would make me feel ridiculously full of joy, I would have raised one eyebrow and said, um, huh? Now, this is the stuff of dreams for me, and I am so grateful for all of it; the handwork, and of course those boys!

  1. michele, i totally agree with the idea that ten years ago i'd have not believed seeing something handmade keeping my family warm would feel THIS good, but it does! i chose granny squares last year as a stash-busting project, and then they sat... and sat... in a box. i couldn't stand to look at them—so much work left to make them a blanket, you know? but then last week i was inspired and they became a christmas/solstice tree quilt! i'm going to check out the way you've done it—circles that become squares—it's lovely!

  2. Thank you Maryam!
Isn't it funny how starting a family changes everything?!?
I love your idea of the tree quilt! And Lucy's method is so easy to follow...if only I could teach my boys to weave in all those ends;-)

  3. I love how colourful those are!

And I'm so with you on the crafting. I never would have gotten it before. But now, it's awesome. I smile whenever I see my family using things that I made them.

  5. Thank you Amber!

And thank you Pennie:-)...I didn't think I had the patience right now either, but those little circles are addicting, and the join as you go method is so easy! It's all those darn ends that'll need weaving in later...maybe I can call them Fringe?!?
